Reporter defends Taleban deal

Richard Owen
The Italian journalist who spent two weeks as a Taleban hostage defended the prisoner exchange that led to his release, despite a storm of international controversy.
Daniel Mastrogiacomo, 52, was seized in Helmand province on March 3 and was forced to watch his Afghan driver being beheaded.
The Repubblica correspondent told a German news agency: “The Taleban control three quarters of southern Afghanistan. There’s 5,000 of them. Releasing two or three prisoners wouldn’t make any difference. I think it is right to negotiate if it means showing that we are different from the Taleban, that we know how to forgive, and that we respect human life above anything else”.
British and US officials fear that the deal for the release of Mr Mastrogiacomo sets a dangerous precedent.
